Saddam WAS perceived as an infidel by some violent political muslims (including Al Q)- why does that matter? Because you don't shack up with people who want you dead- and that was why Saddam couldn't, and NEVER could, get in to bed with Al Q. They want rulers top be subservient to the Koran (well, really to their interpretation of the Koran- but they'd kill you for telling them that). Militant and violent islamicists have killed tons of other muslims (civilians and their leaders, both secular and religious) because the violent militants are very angry at the masses in the muslim world for not rising up and overthrowing their corrupt leaders (seduced by evil western values, and nasty democracy). In Algeria this became so prevalent that 1000's of civilians were killed- and a quote I remember was "Not even the right wing French groups did this to us". It gets to the point that you can kill, as an infidel, anyone who disagrees with you- and that includes other Muslims.
