>> Doing the same thing to Bush only invites retaliation with no political fallout

Now how's this possible? I was under the impression that Bush is already dead set on eradicating them as hard as he can. So what does "retaliation" from Bush mean? What would he do that he is not already doing?

"I do think it follows logically from my views, particularly my notion that the struggle with the Jihadists is presently hanging in the balance, with their commitment pitted against our dwindling resources and domestic political hairball."

Re sentence quoted above, what do you see as the consequences of the Jihadists winning the struggle you refer to?

Do you anticipate that they will conquer the U.S.? Enslave us? Force us to convert to Islam? If so, how do you expect them to overcome our arsenal of over 10,000 nuclear weapons, in addition to our conventional weapons?

<The Jihadists are shrewd political observers, viz., the Spanish bombings. If they can influence a President Kerry to leave Iraq using increased terror designed to create a domestic furor, they will do so.>

They are shrewd -- and that is exactly why they won't use terror against Kerry in the way you imply. Kerry won't cut and run under fire. They will hold fire and Kerry will turn Iraq into an international circus. We will scale back over a year or two and then the civil-regional war that finishes the groundwork for overturning governments in the region by revolution will pick up speed. Make no mistake about it -- Iraq was our primary bulwark against the terrorists, and we were idiotic enough to remove it. Now we will watch the region continue to slip inexorably into the grip of chaos and terror -- if our mission was to help al Qaida, it has indeed been accomplished in spades. Congratulations. Bin Laden owes Bush a Christmas card.
