Exactly right -- in fact the interview transcript of the defector Kamal (mid 90's) says precisely that. Saddam was perfectly aware that the using chemical or biological weapons against US could easily result in the US escalating to the use of nuclear weapons.

Not at all. The primary concern was that he would pass deadly material to terrorists, and thus preserve deniability, which is rational. No one said he was suicidal, just evil and erratic.
