Russ, the nation-wide polls are meaningless for several reasons:

1. The battleground states will decide the election, and Kerry is doing very well there. If Kerry wins Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida, he wins the election, no matter what happens elsewhere.

2. The Democratic get-out-the-vote effort is absolutely unprecedented with almost 10 times as much money being spent as in 2000 (and spent a lot more effectively).

3. Independents are splitting very heavily against Bush - his approval ratings among independents is in the high 30%.

4. Registered and likely voters that are sampled do not include the young demographic - you have to have voted before - and they are 20%+ for Kerry.
