Who knows Keith only duh shadow do...You make it a binary decision and it is clearly not. AMD can allocate substantially more fab space to dual core K8 server chips (substantial capacity relative to the server chip market, that is) without decimating its production capacity elsewhere. As a matter of fact, doing such may have a very salutary impact on pricing power every elsewhere as a halo effect as well as slightly "starving" against real market demand. Do not make the mistake of taking your pessimism too seriously. Your views may only be partially correct, if that much. Cheer up...there is money to be made. Do not miss the very obvious (to many of us) opportunity.

To put it all in perspective Keith, AMD has had far worse troubles in the past than: should we make money this way...or that way...or that way...or that way...or that way.... ???????

Keith

AMD has said that the conversion to 90nm at Fab30 is only scheduled to be "more or less" completed in Q4 next year

Seeing as AMD told analysts that they would be 100% converted to 90nm wafer starts in Q4 of '03, that makes it a 2 year slip, at least. If you are correct that is...

TWY, on the other hand, it would be very important to be prepared for eventualities.

Let´s say dual-core Opteron becomes an instant hit (more than 200sqmm), dual-core desktop chips take off (dual-core A64 more than 150 sqmm), there have been rumours about AMD moving to bigger cache sizes, and at the same time, AMD has said that the conversion to 90nm at Fab30 is only scheduled to be "more or less" completed in Q4 next year
.

Well...... I agree.... if dual core becomes important by late next year, AMD might consider a fabbing agreement.
