I don't think the plans were overly optimistic.

Imagine if the P4 made it to 4+ Ghz as expected. K7 sempron wouldn't be a viable product. K8 sempron would be much less interesting. K7 Athlon's would be unmarketable.

As is the transition to 90 nm is delayed by lack of necessity in addition to any cost/difficulty concerns.

If P4 was flying high then 90 nm would be all or nothing. I'm guessing even Jerry didn't expect the wall to hit quite as soon as it did.
