Amy,

You read the quote entirely too literally. It was black humor. The punchline was the "assassination on the fourth day in office".

If you didn't get the joke, you probably need to review some history.

When John F. Kennedy decided to remove U.S. troops from Viet Nam and try to create a peaceful denouement of the Cold War with Kruschev, Kennedy was assassinated by the Right Wing of our government.

When Martin Luther became too powerful a force for positive change on the civil rights front and then heroically opposed the madness of the Viet Nam War he was assassinated by the Right Wing of our government.

When Bobby Kennedy tried to keep hope alive and became a very viable anti-war progressive candidate in the 1968 primaries, he was assassinated by the Right Wing of our government.

When Senator Paul Wellstone spoke out boldly and honestly and with effect against the illegal and immoral war of aggression in Iraq, and threatened to keep the balance of the Senate in the hands of the Democrats, he was assassinated by the Right Wing of our government.

Are you getting the picture now? Any effort by any effective political leader to be decent in America has and will result in his assassination.

Regards, Ray D.

Q: What's the difference between the Viet Nam War and Iraq today?
A: George Bush had an exit strategy from Viet Nam.
