I suggest Niven, Heinlein, Del Rey, or any of a large number of other authors, past and present, who made American Sci Fi into serious and lasting literature.

Worthwhile Sci Fi is incredibly difficult to put onto film-as witness the otherwise-great Speilberg's many failures. The very FEW good Si Fi movies are keepers, but the sundry Star Wars bubble gum flix aren't on the list.

The rule of thumb still prevails: If you want good Sci Fi, stay home and READ it. You'll save a bundle of dough in the process...

That last episode really stank. This new one has got to be much better, it certainly can't be much worse.

I believe Star Wars was killed from the beginning with their attempt to appeal to the widest audience. Catering to the children became more gross with the additional characters introduced in later episode. The Ewoks for example were absolutely ridiculous. A band of boy scouts could have wiped them out. You can't have the ultimate evil vs good battle and toss in slop to appeal to toddlers.
