The founding fathers were not into nuance and christian fundamentalists share that preference for clear moral guidelines. Activist judges recent actions trying to force a legal stamp of approval on their preferred lifestyle backfired on liberals. The majority of voters who disagree with the arrogant judges convictions, decided to make it perfectly clear that the laws of the USA will not be used to completely confuse generations of children about the traditional purpose of marriage. Majority rules, not certain narrow factions of a population who prefer unusual lifestyles.
I was surprised to learn that 22% of Bush voters stated that values was their primary concern and Iraq was mentioned by 19%. I do agree however that cultural standards need improvement.
