INSTAPUNDIT - IT'S LITTLE GREEN MEN, WITH SQUEEGEES:

As NASA's Mars rovers keep rolling past all expectations of their useful lives, scientists have a happy mystery: For some reason one of the vehicles has actually gained power recently.

Opportunity recently experienced an unexplained rejuvenation from what can so far be described only as two or three significant "cleaning events,'' said Jim Erickson, the rover project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

"Now we're assuming they're cleaning, but all we can really say is that overnight the solar panels produced between 2 and 5 percent additional power immediately,'' he said. "We're surmising that for some reason dust is being removed from the solar panel and that's increasing the efficiency of the sunlight being converted to electricity.''

The rover team has been bandying about theories, but hasn't figured out the cause.

"One favorite is that a dust devil happened to pick the vehicle to go through and go over the surface of it and clean it off a little bit,'' Erickson said.

SEATTLE - It has been a SAD week in Seattle, city of rain, darkness, caffeine, secularism and an 82 percent majority that voted in vain to fire President Bush.

Seattle folks are hiding the sadness well. Either that or the view from Washington may be obscured...or...the reporter is full of bs.

I spent the last few days in Seattle (departed this AM). RON'd at the downtown Sheraton right in the middle of everything for three nights.

Friday and Saturday the streets downtown were packed with people. The shops were doing booming business everywhere. And, fer goodness sakes, all the coffee shops were full.
There were eight parties (I know of) in our hotel in 2 days including one for 850 last night. Restaurant reservations were hard to get at the best fishhouses and as we walked back from Morton's last night at about 8:45PM the sidewalks were still packed with people and it was drizzling. Traffic was still bumper to bumper.

I did not hear anyone talking politics anywhere. I did see some pathetic newspaper headlines. Saturday morning in a Starbucks a guy leaving tried to hand me a newspaper. I said no thanks. He looked at me closer and said I don't blame you the Seattle paper sucks. We both chuckled.

Seattle looked pretty doggone healthy to me, and I got some nifty Christmas gifts. But I'm glad to be back in the boonies.

Made an SF connection at Ft Lewis on Friday morning. That was fun too.

For the most part, the people my husband and I have encountered in the few days since the election have really been despondent. He works around a slew of liberals, and they could barely conceal their sorrow. It was very quiet and subdued. It was the after shock.........no body was poking their head up. There were no people about. It was quieter than usual. There were no extraneous noises like guns, trucks, construction equipment.......there was an eerie silence to the place even though we are in the belly of the beast.

I encountered a very vocal, and upset young man in line at the local grocery store. He had the attention of everyone else with his tirade about the ignorance of American citizens, he threatened to move to Canada. The guy that was checking me out raised his eyebrows......as did I. I had a blast listening to him.......observing the people around me and wishing my cheeks didn't hurt so much, but glad for the reason. For the most part, I think most liberals did their ranting in private.

When the guy at the gas station was ringing up my bill for a diet pepsi he casually said, "I don't like that guy" as he pointed to a mercedes that was fueling that had Bush/Cheney signs in it's windows and American flags on both back passenger windows. I said that was too bad. I told him I had voted for Bush and that I was extremely happy. He smiled and said in a very friendly way that he was happy for me..........I liked that.

BTW: No need to spend money on expensive machines. The solution to SAD is to spend at least 1/2 hour outside every day rain, shine, gray, blue. The small amount of ultra violet that manages to enter the lens of the eye even on dark, gloomy days significantly alleviates the symptoms of SAD.

Looks like Blain Harden is a glass half empty kind of guy....What a gloomy article. Wonder if he bothered coming here to do any interviews??? If people hate it here, they wouldn't keep coming to Seattle.

I notice that Bush's win didn't cause the Libs in Seattle to tear down the Lenin statue that resides in Ballard. Or even decorate it, as the residents sometimes do....

Maybe Harden reported after the UofW Huskies were trounced by Arizona at the UDub Homecoming yesterday....The stands were full, and as I reported yesterday, the roads were totally 100% clogged....The Libs can't have been too terribly sad.....
