"IMHO, it will be a long haul for the moderate democrats."

The 60's pendulum swing was event driven. Civil rights, Viet Nam, exposing government corruption (watergate), Roe v Wade, etc. There were many social agendas that did not have sufficient momentum of their own to cause social movement and these all seemed to piggy back on the core issues. The entire movement spoke to the conscience of American people and people in other Westernised countries. This was all related to moral outrage over injustices that were being perpetuated by the establishment. It was this that caused such a severe swing to the left. For a while it looked like we were involved in a social revolution where communal living might become as mainstream as core families. Extreme propogandized organisations like NOW and code speak agendas like 'Family Planning' didn't really bother us that much until clinton got so cute about his approach to justice ... 'depends' didn't sit well with the mainstream. That was IMO the key turning point.

No such moral compass exists at the present for the left.

At the moment the lefties are all reactively unfocused on anything but trying to spread the message that Bush is to be despised. The rationale are relatively unpalatable. Because he is on a Christian trip… he reaches out inclusively to Islam with regards to political objectives. He was dishonest about reasons to attack Iraq… no body buys that although it continues to present itself as left wing talking points. He joined the National Guard and was less than enthusiastic about serving at a time when boys his age were dodging the draft when ever they could … yawn. Whether you agree with his conservatism or not, his performance on the job during the past 4 years has been focused, purposeful and strategically productive . Something sorely missing on the leftwing platform.

It may take events or the left may just need a few years to mature out of this screaming denial phase. But, for sure we will see a swing back toward the middle eventually.
