I think I read that they do appoint Chief Justices from outside, although I can't recall this in my lifetime.

Thomas has the advantage of being young. O'Connor wanted to retire four years ago, but hung on for the 2000 election, and then changed her mind.

Rehnquist I think would stay if he could.

Scalia they say wants to retire although I can't imagine that. What would he do, go into private practice? Completely unimaginable to me.
