Today Europe is to the US what the Byzantine empire (today's Turkey) was to Latin Europe in the XIIth, XIIIth, XIVth and XVth centuries... Somehow, the US president is a modern-day Doge of Venice, the sea power at the time...

I don't agree. There may be similarities but there are some important differences. First of all, America is the spawn of Europe.........we are an amalgamation of the European countries.......mostly Christian with some Jews and Muslims. Byzantine Empire was mostly Muslim with some Eastern Orthodox Christians.

At its height, part of Europe was under the thumb of the Byzantine Empire. They controlled portions of S. Hungary, S. Spain, S. Russia and Yugoslavia as well as Greece and Turkey. In fact, Muslims have been a threat to Europe on a couple of occasions......invading the southern and central regions. Whereas Europe does not present a threat to the US....in fact, the reverse is true.

Finally, the Byzantine Empire was deteriorating internally from corruption, malfeasance and incompetence while Europe was in the ascendant. I don't believe either Europe nor US is suffering from the same disease.

I think human attempts to make analogies of today's problems with those of the past is pretty normal. I just don't see it the connection with your analogy. I think Bush has created a serious problem that will only grow worse with time. Its unfortunate but I think the EU/US alliance has been damaged, if not fatally, pretty seriously.
