Did you like the exhibit?

The show was "Comic Grotesque: Wit and Mockery in German Art, 1870-1940," so "liking" isn't quite the word, at least not for me.

Here it is.

I mean, it's a brilliant exhibit, full of great works of art, and I wouldn't have wanted to miss it, but one has to struggle against the Yuck, creeped-out factor a lot of the time, when viewing work from this school. I'm speaking personally. (I know that's the point of these pieces.)

Still, we went with friends, with whom we first had lunch in the museum's restaurant, which is very good, and it was a great day. After the museum, I made N go look with me for a white dress shirt to go with his tuxedo, for a black tie occasion on Wednesday night. We have a perfectly good shirt in that style but I can't find the damn thing. I can find all the tux appurtenances except the fancy shirt. Where is it? I've looked every place. I don't want to buy another one, so I made him stop before we went home and bought a plain white, very nice, dress shirt, but not the formal kind, so he can wear it other times. (He didn't have a single normal white business-style shirt. Now he does.) Tell me it's okay to wear a regular, non-French cuffs, no tucks in front, white shirt with a dinner jacket. Some guys are wearing sneakers with their tuxes now.

And were you able to go see your ill friend afterward?

We decided it was too soon, so didn't even ask. He just got out of the hospital on Friday and is very messed up and weak.

I see that here's a conversation about gay marriage going on. Later, I think I'll talk here about this subect in connection with this friend and his partner, who have been married, de facto but not de jure, for about 25 years.

Edit: the clerk in the store where we got the shirt was coughing and coughing. I asked him if he had the flu, he said he thought so, which was a bad thing because his wife was "with child." I thought it was also a bad thing because he was filling the air with scary germs. We came home and took a bunch of those placebo things that are supposed to stave off the flu and colds.
