The critical element of the question is that on some issues the opinions of elites and intellectuals probably is the minority opinion, and people who hold the majority opinion perceive the elites and intellectuals projecting contempt on those that don't share the "elite" opinion. The contempt gets returned causing an anti-elite and anti-intellectuals mood in many. In some being against "intellectuals" goes further in to an "anti-intellectual" mood.

(Note the distinction between anti-intellectuals, or being against intellectuals whether real or self styled, and anti-intellectual by which I mean being against highly developed intellectual modes of though and reasoning, preferring to concentrate on "common sense", or "experience in the real world". The 1st can lead to the 2nd and in some cases it does but they are not the same thing.)
