The contempt gets returned causing an anti-elite and anti-intellectuals mood in many. In some being against "intellectuals" goes further in to an "anti-intellectual" mood.

I hope you were trying to make my point for me because you did a fine job. What you describe is very much like "acting white."

BTW and FWIW, I had a brief email discussion about a week ago with the leftiest person I know. My question to him was not about contempt but condescension, and it was framed as coming from the blues rather than elites, but that's close enough, I think, for our purpose. He insisted that the condescension was bidirectional and equivalent. Unfortunately, the venue wasn't suitable for be to draw him out further on the subject.

The 1st can lead to the 2nd and in some cases it does but they are not the same thing.)

I agree that they're not the same thing. I'm not much interested in the negative attitudes two opposing groups have about each other. That's commonplace. I'm more concerned about the rejection of intellectual approaches. Not healthy, IMO.

I understand why it rankles when minority opinions take precedence over majority opinions. Of course, the validity of an opinion is not a function of the number of people that hold it, but in politics, validity as a criterion is secondary.
