'The average moderate won't take up arms at all unless he is forced."

My example wasnt meant to be so black or white. The point was that a moderate will pick side and is very likely to side with the insurgents than ours.

"A lot of the insurgents are not locals. They are terrorists from other countries, or radicals from different areas in Iraq. A lot of the insurgents are not locals. They are terrorists from other countries, or radicals from different areas in Iraq. Some of them are fairly secular but as far as I can tell the majority are radical Islamisicts. Most Iraqis don't want a Taliban like government. Our problem isn't as much with the moderates joining up with the other side, its the fact that many of them won't lift a finger to help us"

The main success of the insurgent is a result of the support from the locals (in hiding them, not helping us, etc etc). In addition, a lot of local Sunnis have taken up arms against us. And why wouldn't they ? Imagine, in one swoop, we have taken the power away from top 25% of the affluent society in Iraq. Do we really expect them to not fight or support the new order, where Shiites and Americans control ? Imagine the top 25% americans put in this situation. Wouldn't they/we fight that fiercely ?

I dont think, the govt has given much thought to anything, except how to get Saddam out of power.

Bum.
