Nice list. I would add one thing to that. Most people want to know that the system they are participating in or supporting is fair and just.

Americans who want a good education system really should move to Europe or something. American public education is for the most part absolutely dreadful, and No Child Left Behind is exactly the thing that is making it even worse.

More Americans every year are losing their health insurance. We are the only industrialized nation without national health insurance for everyone.

The opportunity to work? We are rapidly becoming a nation with mostly poorly paid service industry jobs, and a small ruling class which owns almost everything. There has never been a wider gap between what low-paid workers and CEOs make. In case you didn't notice, many of our jobs, including family wage jobs, are disappearing to the third world.

The right not to follow a religion? With God on our money and in our pledge of allegiance, it feels pretty religious to me. And with the evangelical right in power and making laws that suit only their belief system, that sure doesn't work very well for non-Christians.

Some people migrated to America for religious freedom, or to escape religious persecution. A lot of people migrated because all of their potato crop got a fungus, or for other economic reasons. Certainly our religious freedoms seem to be narrowing at the moment.

It would be nice to think you could follow your own path to happiness, but how happy can anyone except extremely selfish and shortsighted people be when the planet is dramatically degrading around us, climate-change storms are so strong and unpredictable that millions of people will die soon from weather-related events, and the planet we give our grandchildren will have sea levels 23 feet higher than they are now by the end of the century? Do you have any idea how many entire nations that puts under water? I don't feel real happy.
