UTStarcom Announces Contract for MovingMedia 2000 All-IP CDMA Solution With Movicel in Angola
Monday November 15, 9:05 am ET
All-IP Solution Enables Transmissions Savings of Approximately 98 Percent When Compared With Traditional TDM Approach

# ALAMEDA, Calif., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UTStarcom, Inc. (Nasdaq: UTSI - News), a global leader in IP access networking and services, today announced the deployment of its MovingMedia 2000 all-IP network solution with Movicel Telecomunicacoes LDA (Movicel), a fully owned subsidiary of Angola Telecom. With more than 200,000 subscribers in Angola, Angola Telecom is the largest CDMA cellular operator in Africa and the leader in innovation and quality of services in Angola.(Photo: NewsCom: newscom.com )

"Thanks to UTStarcom's MovingMedia 2000 solution, Movicel can now expand its CDMA2000-1x network and services countrywide with a next-generation, all-IP CDMA system that can offer high-quality cellular service via satellite to subscribers in 13 provinces in Angola that we could not previously reach," said Jose Luis De Lara, chief technical officer of Movicel. "We researched many different solutions for this challenging deployment and found that UTStarcom's MovingMedia 2000 was the only CDMA solution on the market today that could cost effectively build our nationwide network, making efficient use of the scarce transmission resources to connect to these remote areas of Angola."

The initial phase of the deployment with Movicel will consist of rolling out network equipment to provide CDMA voice, data access, SMS, and international roaming to approximately 120,000 subscribers at 32 remote sites in eight provinces in Angola. The operator plans to expand the subscriber capacity and coverage area of the network significantly over the next several years in hopes of reaching more than one million subscribers by 2007.

"Our MovingMedia 2000 solution provides operators with a complete, end-to-end, all-IP CDMA network that can be transmitted over any access technology, be it copper, fiber, microwave, optical, or satellite," said Jack Mar, president of CDMA division at UTStarcom. "Because of our solution's unique approach to local switching, operators can realize significant savings related to transmission backhaul costs on an annual basis that will speed their return on investment in our technology."

Forward-Looking Statements

The foregoing statements regarding, without limitation, the ability of Movicel to expand, in a cost-efficient manner, its provision of high-quality cellular services on a national basis in Angola, the ability of Movicel to reach more than one million subscribers by 2007 and the likelihood that MovingMedia 2000 will allow operators to achieve significant cost savings are forward-looking in nature and are subject to risks and uncertainties that may cause actual results to differ materially. These factors include rapidly changing technology, the changing nature of the telecommunications market in general and the market for Angola in particular, the possibility of slower than expected growth in the telecommunications market, evolving product and application standards, changes or delays in product introductions and deployments, possible downturns in the Angolan market, the termination of significant contracts, partnerships or alliances, and other uncertainties, such as changes in government regulation and licensing requirements in relevant markets.
