Granted, some folks may be responding in just the way your note suggests, for simplistic reasons without considering the whole picture.

But...

Others are looking at the big picture and the inconsistencies. For those that consider the war illegal, any action taken by "coalition" forces is going to be wrong under their looking glass. That is to be expected.

The hypocrisy of the Bush administration doesn't help matters. Lets look at the issue of War Crimes Act / Geneva Convention vs folks like Gonzales which are happy to write secret laws in grand cover your ass style.

Iraq war, the start: Rumsfeld and others were crying about Iraq holding US prisoners and putting them on TV, at the start of the invasion, claiming it was a breach of the Geneva Conventions. For putting them on TV for craps sake.

Iraq war, now: No rules, American forces can kill anything that moves, thanks to Gonzales law. Just don't put it on TV.

Guantanamo, forever: No rules. Lock em up danno, evidence or not. Don't give them any ability to defend themselves, or speak to council, don't tell them what the evidence is, etc. Break Geneva convention.

Notes to government officials: Don't follow any sense of international law, not even US law, but be sure to express outrage when someone else does the same to us.

I do not blame the troops, I blame the administration. Unfortunately the buck doens't stop there. Bush has so little regard for American law that he is skirting it to protect his own ass.

That is most certainly not leadership.

Gersh, Odd we didn't hear the same kind of sympathy from right wing bloggers when the Swift Boat Liars were accusing Kerry of shooting an unarmed Vietcong fighter. Of course, I suppose a lie doesn't require our sympathy while the incident of an actual shooting of an unarmed enemy does. Note I said incident. They're going to have to find out the real story on this one and one video does not tell it all. So, I don't think anyone should label it a war crime until it is proven to be one. I just hope the Marine's actions aren't part of the "Abu Ghraib/Gitmo/Geneva Convention is Quaint" slant of this administration.

your inelastic little brain doesn't quite get the point. The issue is not about a particular marine's conduct. the issue is, who and for what reason, sent those kids there in the first place. we're killing them, and turning them into little sadistic prison guards. For what? On what basis? For what result?

oh.. it was your vote.

I voted for this guy, but you guys don't see him this way.

FWIW, I think too much attention has been paid to this incident. It's a war zone, sometimes tricky judgement calls have to be made, and it's awfully easy to second guess them from 8000 miles away.....(still doesn't mean the decision to be there in the first place is correct, though.....)
