(I think you'd have to start by bringing 'pain' to *both* sides of the aisle to achieve any measurable reduction in federal spending and the over-all steady growth in the size of the federal government --- especially considering that the rate of growth in discressionary spending [not to mention deficit spending, which increases the interest repayment portion of the budget] has risen quite a bit in recent years.)
