I'm not sure I can explain, but I'll try.

We seem to draw the line somewhere about what kind of "animal" life we can destroy at will. It's usually a misdemeanor to deliberately kill a dog or cat, but when you reach rodents it's okay to slaughter them. By the time you get to insects you can do anything you please with them, or to them. So I don't think there are many who regard it as immoral to deliberately step on an ant crossing the sidewalk, even though you have no good reason to do so.

How can you raise it as a moral issue with your kids, if you periodically nuke all the insects in your house with an insect bomb or spray?

It's all pretty arbitrary, but I think the issue in my example is something other than "morality."
