A senior government official told the Globe and Mail that Ottawa is discussing its possible role in the election slated for January 30 with the United States, the United Nations (news - web sites) and the interim government in Iraq.

A formal announcement could coincide with President Bush (news - web sites)'s visit to Canada next week.

"There are conversations around that, but no commitments have been asked for or given," the official said.

The official added that Canada is "known for our elections management," pointing to the role the country played in preparing for and monitoring the recent election in Afghanistan (news - web sites).

Canada would probably be asked to help in developing the technical infrastructure for the election, including printing ballots, helping with voter registration, designing polling stations and training officials for election day.

Malcolm, Don't you see that Canada's high tax rates are caused by wasteful spending by politicians that, in other countries, goes on defense, and if Canada continues badmouthing the US Canada will need to fund their own defense and that will entail raising taxes? T
