Taikun, Canada only needs to defend itself against Americans. Given the border and the USA military power, it's a bit pointless to even try.

Canada would do best to defend itself by promoting a reconstituted UN fit for the 21st century's globalized world where warring nation states are an anachronism of the 19th century.

I don't see any enemies for the defense against which Canada will have to raise taxes. There are plenty of bad guys in the world, such as the Hutus, the Sudan government, the Myanmar generals, etc. but all of them except Bush/Sharon are in the other hemisphere, not able to launch an offensive against Canada. As for Bush etc. are you saying we have to arm ourselves to the teeth against the Americans? Wouldn't it be cheaper to write cheques to the Democrats?
