What is needed is sand with very tiny, perfectly spherical granules of asbolutely pure SI02. The only way to make them that spherical and so tiny is to make them on the space shuttle in zero gravity. The sand is then coated with a layer of diamond and one atom thick of sputtered gadolinium-germanium.

The granicles can then be used as a filler in Mars Bars.

If one area is left uncoated the sphere acts as a laser due to refraction. Different areas of the sphere act as a semiconductor switch allowing multiple logic levels and a bridge between multi frequency light and electrical transmission. Obvious uses are as beds for high current density solar cells, and nodes in hybrid light-electric gates.

This moment brought to you by the PSBC.
