And seeking to spread democracy into the benighted Middle East is certainly not a bad thing vis a vis American ideals. One can argue it is too monumental a task, I think, but not that the goal is contrary to our values. If you believe that spreading democracy was the goal then there is probably little use in discussing the situation further with you. The primary goal of the US in the middle east is to secure land mass and resources, either through negotiation or by force. This latest foray into trade by force certainly is not the first time that the US has gone this route, history is replete with examples -- and in almost all cases, the administration propaganda painted the quest as a noble one: to paraphrase any number of former presidents - "bringing peace and democracy and good government to the savages". The Taliban, Saddam Hussein, the Iranian mullahs, and the human sacrificers of Al Qaida and its various sub-groups are about the most villainous folks around since Hitler, Stalin and Mao left this mortal coil. The US has killed more innocent civilians in the last two hundred years than the "Taliban, Saddam Hussein, the Iranian mullahs, and the human sacrificers of Al Qaida and its various sub-groups" put together -- by many orders of magnitude. So what, I wonder, is your point?
