I learned from a therapist that the people who gain weight after quitting smoking do so because smoking is also an oral compulsion that overeating seeks to satisfy. The act of eating replaces the oral compulsion of the act of smoking, and the brain teaches itself to replace the nicotine addiction with the best substitute it can come up with: food. You need food every day, several times a day and your brain says, "Ahhhh", just like nicotine. "Eat more!"
