Why couldn't it be:

1. Universities attract smart people and smart people think alike?
2. Truth is pretty much self evident.
3. If you have time to study and think, you arrive at conclusions differently than most people who do not have the time, the bandwidth, and the desire to study and think.

That is the way people in the elite Liberal Arts institutions would like to interpret it. But selection bias works a lot of ways besides just "smart people". There are a lot of other selection biases at play besides just "smart people" and these work differently in each field and in each university where people are trained and get the idea to go in to the academic professions.

George Will has plenty of bandwidth and he usually use it thoughtfully. And expresses his thoughts respectfully. I'm a fan. There are lots of possible explanations for the academic phenomenon, some of which he mentioned. Which is why I was disappointed in what I took, because I know he's not stupid, to be gratuitous pandering to those who like their logic in small doses and their hyperbole in small ones.

Truth is pretty much self evident.

I doubt that. IMO, it's getting harder and harder all the time to find. Too much bombardment by ignorant and/or malicious obfuscation.
