>How do these competitions usually work?

Well, more often than not, I win... +/-1. <vbg>

Message 20000001

The only prize that I recall, other than t-shirts, was a trip to Seattle for Message 10000000. Note that the [explicitive deleted] got the 7777 grub simultaneously.

Oh, and I won "Admin For a Day" for #4000000, though I didn't collect for about six years... and boy has it been a long day!

Let's get some suggestions from the field. We can certainly do some subscription comps, and should even extend that to users who suggest "significant" new features (not already on the docket) that get implemented.

I've got a couple of ideas, but let's see what else gets suggested first.

The last time we had such a contest, a lot of people ended up just posting one-liner nonsense in the hope of being the winner. This actually made the boards boring in the hours (days?) leading to the prize. I think this time around we should use the opportunity to improve the quality of the boards. My suggestion is that the winning post has to be at least 100 words long, be the work of the poster rather than a cut-n-paste (jokes may be accepted as "original"). Hopefully this will lead to people writing up a lot of good posts rather than useless one-liners.

Bob, speaking of prizes, you may have forgotten but you were considering giving me something for posting the first message after the upgrade to your wonderful new SI.

btw, count me as one of the Grandfathered members that will never send you one penny. My belief is that when you purchased SI you also got all their liabilities... including providing Grandfathered members access all future features. Maybe you are not legally required to do so, but it is the right thing to do. In the past, you have always done the right thing. I hope will you reconsider the current policy.

we should have some kind of contest having to do with post #21,000,000.

That reminds me: at some point it might be a good idea to start planning for SI's 10th birthday, which will be next year on August 8th or 15th, depending on what you think was "the" launch date...
