Most of that drop has been as a result of low interest rates. The lowering of rates came after staggering losses in the market that started under Clinton. We could have decided to take our medicine by way of elongated recession but that wouldn't have sat well in our consumption based economy. Americans want to have their cake and eat it to. So, in an effort to stave off a major, market driven, recession we lowered rates and started printing money with the hopes we could have a soft landing. As it stands right now we can only speculate on the outcome but it sure makes American products look a lot more attractive overseas. I know it irritates other countries but lets at least be honest enough to admit that other countries have been manipulating their currency against ours for a long time.

Take China for example.
