Quite honestly, everything can't be done by private enterprise. There is no profit in supporting the dispossessed or mentally ill. You can't privatize prisons because the private sector would not be bound in ways that civil authorities would be and such places are doomed to have substandard food and treatment. Dostoyevsky said that a people can be judged by how they treat the insane and criminals.

Unless we are all ready to step into a world like that of Mad Max, where everything is to be taken and held by the strongest or smartest, there is a need for a government. That government should support the interests of all, but especially those who are at the bottom of the heap. Be warned, there are no utopian ideals to be had. One man/one vote can easily be thwarted by one man and bunch of armed thugs.

Our country is only as stable as it is because we have already hashed out disagreements in (frequently bloody) long-held battles between the ruling elite and the individual. It is foolish to think that human nature will change and a legitimate roll of government is to assure the rights of all people.
