>> Quite honestly, everything can't be done by private enterprise...

Of course not and I don't think I even hinted at such concept. This is what the taxes are for; to meet the essential needs that are best handled by the government.

>> It is foolish to think that human nature will change and a legitimate roll of government is to assure the rights of all people.

I agree that human nature changes about as fast as geological eras. So I am not counting on that at all.

But I disagree that good government is an unachievable dream. We must all try to push for it. In fact history of the world teaches us that over time governments become more responsive to the average citizen (due to public pressure).

>> Our country is only as stable as it is because we have already hashed out disagreements in (frequently bloody) long-held battles between the ruling elite and the individual.

Depending on whom you believe, something around 95% of US is owned by 5% of the population. So if this is a real democracy, what is preventing the rest of the population to vote the distribution of that wealth around? US has been stable because of a combination of excellent propaganda and economic growth that has convinced the masses this is as good as it gets and that they are moving ahead. However there is only so much this can carry one forward. For the first time most Americans do not believe in the "American Dream" anymore. Let's wait and see how the population will vote once the boomers retire and realize they don't have enough money to make ends meet.
