First of all, I am quoting you what the National Security Advisor and Secretry of State have said and they should know more than you or I. Secondly, you don't have it right as to what really happend. Carter-Brzezinski had this stupid idea of "Green Wall" (or shield or whatever it was they called it at the time, you can look it up I am sure). Green here is a reference to the color of Islam. They believed that a set of fundamentalist muslim regimes would be a great barrier against the evil godless commies. There are plenty of indications, memoirs, interviews, etc that at the very least the Carter administration was "neutral" towards the Islamic revolution in Iran while at the same time discouraging Shah from fighting off the revolution (in other words Carter was not neutral). There are some indications that US and UK actually did help the revolutionaries and set the wheels in motion, but that is open to debate (the previous statement is not). US was quick to recognize the new regime in Iran and Carter was willing to honor all the previous agreements including the transfer of 50 F16 jets which at the time were the most advanced jet fighters and few nations had them. However, as is often the case, the revolution took a life of its own and a bunch of students decided to pull what they thought was a "prank" or "short protest" (see Among the Hostage-Takers theatlantic.com ) For Carter it was critical to get the hostages back. But the dynamics of the revolution did not allow for diplomatic solution with Carter because in a game of revolutionary one-upmanship Khomeini stated that "Carter must go". It is no secret that the Iranian military was based on American armaments. Carter-Brzezinski hoped that by enticing Saddam to invade Iran, Iranians will have no choice to make nice with the US so as to get the spare parts they badly needed to defend themselves. This was yet another example of their miscalculations. ST
