OK, let's take the Indian sub-continent. The British ruled there for 200 years plus, didn't they, before uniting* for independence. 200 years is a long time. And by that time, Britain was too weakened to maintain a world-wide empire.

*Actually they didn't unite for independence - but split from the very beginning of the end of British rule into two nations.

Another example - Mexico: How long did it take Mexico to rebel against Spain? About 300 years.

So, yes people always unite against an invader - well, if you wait enough centuries anyway.

Course, none of these examples relate directly to Iraq. We aren't making an empire, but setting up an independent government with vast international support,including the UN (see UNSC Res. 1546).
