The expense is good for bankrupting the U.S. This is a well-known goal of certain Republican "intellectuals" such as Grover Norquist.

While the carriers may be obsolete in terms of a World War scenario, they do play a very effective role in punishing, pummelling and/or intimidating any nation on the planet that may think about getting out of line with American imperial ambition.

Don't forget, it was a biplane that brought down the Bismark.

A single steam assisted launch from a destroyer. One torpedo, hit the rudder, and the pride of the German Navy became a sitting duck.
