Hi Neolib. Regarding: I don't hold out any significant hope that things will change much after January. Bush can't cut and run or the place falls apart and becomes the premier terror breeding locale. So we are stuck there, and as long as we are there, they will keep fighting us and themselves.

But if he "stays the course," the place will continue to be the premier terror breeding locale and, as an added bonus, an ever expanding graveyard for our troops, our power to recruit into our military and reserves, our treasury and our trust and prestige in the world.

We're not stuck there if we're willing to cut our losses. When he decided to invade and occupy he bet the farm. It was a bad bet; his dad told him that, the experts told him that and the senior leadership of the military told him that but he listened to none of them. When you make a bad bet you don't recover by increasing your bet, you recover by taking your losses, learning and refusing to make the same mistake again. Only the stupid thinker or the true believer takes the "stay the course" approach in the face of increasing losses with no favorable end in sight.

The simple truth is that while he "cannot leave without huge costs," he cannot stay without incurring even greater losses for our nation. As far as the losses the Iraqis must suffer; that horse has left the barn and we can't control it.

Getting out may not be in his best political interests but who cares? History will not judge him kindly for his decisions and actions over the last few years. The buck has to stop somewhere, sometime. Ed

Hopefully rummy is there for cleanup purposes only and after the election our policy can move off the dime that it is seemingly stuck on. After this weekend, its hard to see anything but a three state solution awaiting us down the road. What will be the names of the three states?
1. Kurdistan
2. Triangularistan
3. Shiaastan

We will have civil war in #2 and border conflicts between the others and the triangle and other neighbors i am sure. Sun thought the best solution syrian takeover of western iraq. Give them all a Baaath so to speak. Can kurds and turks get along. Can iraqi shaiaa arabs remain free of persian shiaa control? We will have to add a wing to the State Department and hire new analysts given all this.
