Hi michael

I'd be shocked if Bush cuts and runs. It is counter to everything he has stood for in the public eye. The political problem is way to big for this option.

Iraq is the centerpiece in the WOT. Saddam was contained on the WMD front without the war. So the only viable strategy is to show the we removed a very bad guy who helped terror groups (admittedly, mainly anti-Israel)and we leave the place in better shape, especially wrt. an incubator for terror. The place cannot be allowed to implode, even if it save a few thousand GI's lives.

Bush would like to address a number of important issues such as SS reform, major tax code changes, environmental issues, etc in his next term. If the major showpiece of his first term ends as a disaster, he will face four years as a very lame duck.

On this board, most people seem to fall into one of two camps 1) the current methods (with perhaps a bit more vigor) will prevail and things will get better and go our way, or 2)cut and run and leave the mess to the Iraqis.

I think both are dead wrong. The goal of a peaceful and prosperous Iraq is good. It is our strategies that are poor. The problem is that both 1 & 2 seek "peace with honor" where the peace and honor are for us. We need strategies that aim to provide the Iraqis with honor first, and then peace will follow. Grinding them in the dust at every opportunity does not accomplish this.
