Why do the drug companies need to advertise for Rx drugs-- it's incredibly expensive, and wouldn't the money be better spent on the research- the need for which they say is behind the high prices? My allergist told me people are always coming in demanding drugs they see on tv and they get irritated if he won't comply.

Do you know, that's more of a think on U.S. television channels? I confess that I don't watch much television, but a year ago, I watched a little to pass the time last winter. There were tons of drug advertisements on during certain shows. I asked Mr. Croc what in heck that was all about and he said, "Those are on the american stations." What I find really weird is that they must include the "may cause side effects" part, so there's this narrator's voice nimbly spewing a list of horrendous conditions that might result if you take that drug. I think they try to talk as fast as they can so that you can't really hear the parts about how the drug may cause a stroke, heart attack, weak spells, fainting, anemia, fragile bones, etc.. etc.. Freaking scary, mon! I haven't taken a prescription for anything since taking some antibiotics for my cut hand over 10 years ago. What in *hell* is going on with the world that people should be watching all of these commercials about drugs that they probably don't need -- drugs that are very likely going to result in side effects or that will cause adverse reactions when taken simultaneously with other drugs. hmmmph!!!!

(that's my Croc Rant for today).

"Last weekend, my wife and I, along with 950 other doctors and spouses, were in Las Vegas as the guests of a multi-billion-dollar drug cartel. We were put up in an opulent suite at the Venetian, Vegas's newest hypertrophied casino-hotel.

"The cartel was trying to persuade us to prescribe their brand name of a cholesterol-lowering drug which, actually, is no better or worse than five other "statins" on the market. (But only one of which sends the doctor to Venice in Vegas.)"

BTW, Rambi, wonderfully warm and humorous telling of your ER visits with your sons over the years. Would love to read the book. - Holly

Why do the drug companies need to advertise for Rx drugs

For the same reason other companies advertise their products. True with RX drugs they need to get the doctor on board, but they send adds, and sales reps and samples to the doctor as well.
