I am a firm believer in Buddhist principles. Given sufficient time, the Buddha nature would emerge even in the examples you cited. Imagine what you would do if you knew for a certainty that there was no god, no after life, and no rules; you were free to do any and all that you wanted. For most people, after a period of temporary insanity, they would return to their normal lives, only they would be more relaxed and more compassionate because they knew they live the life they have because they choose to rather than they have to. This, by the way, is not so different than some Zen training.
