Ralph,

This:

<Europe, like Canada and Australia and just about every other country in the world believes in looking after its citizens and thus has a social safety net which is expensive.>

is a joke, particularly on Canada. Are you're so brainwashed by the politicians that's what you *think* they do with your high taxes? 15% sales tax, US$3.50/gal gas (due to the taxes), 45% Federal income tax at US$40,000/yr plus Provincial income tax of another 10%+ everywhere but Alberta.

My brother in Vancouver has to get an MRI because his back was injured in a car accident. The wait: 1 year. Another friend needs a hip operation, the wait is 1 year. After 6 months they're addicted to painkillers so they pay $20,000 to get it done in the US.

In Vancouver, a disabled homeless person gets C$70/week in gov't benefits, while immigrants get free English lessons for 18 months (at least we know the immigrants will repay the 'gift' of a passport and vote Liberal).

I thought the financial industry was the biggest leech on human productivity, then I found out about the Canadian gov't.

The reason why these countries can't consume is their politicians have made them think it is the socially correct thing to do when they pay high taxes. Companies can't sell anything at home? Sell to the US then. I agree with the writer, but you've got it wrong.

David

ralph,
In Canada we are not really taking care of our folks. The government be it Liberal or whoever listens the the same 'experts' on health care with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo... (David and I have already discussed this and don't agree on the best system for some basic reasons).

However our system will be lost if we do not get some accountability ... the wait time issue is getting worse. No two ways about it.

Our income taxes are not as bad as David indicates ... The federal rate is 29% max... he is likely looking at the combined figures since as you know only Quebec collects its own provincial tax.

HOWEVER that gun registry scam and the current EI scam could have paid for a lot of MRI's , n'est-ce pas ? We have no accountability... We can debate the merits of he American I can afford it and I want it now system or the Tommy Douglas universal approach... if ours delivered everyone would want it... but right now it doesn't... I'd prefer to fix it then turf it though... OTOH hand David also knows that the wait time for an American without 20K for an MRI is likely a bit longer than 1 year... a lot longer...

Ralph in principle ours is fair but it's lost its principles...

Kastel

re: which team is the Romans and which the Christians?

The Christians:
turn the other cheek
forgive their enemies
cherish life,
so they are against the death penalty,
and oppose all wars of aggression

The Romans:
worship a tribal War God,
who tells them they are the Chosen People, destined to rule the world
solve problems by killing people

Easy to tell them apart
