"Neoconservative" never had a precise programmatic content

The lovely Katrina Vanden Heuvel thinks otherwise. She was a guest on a radio program I caught a bit of yesterday. She and the host were discussing the "wholesale purges" in the Bush administration. When speaking of Condi Rice, Vanden Heuvel said that while Rice is "not a full fledged member of the neocons," she is still a hard liner. LOL! What does she think? There are secret initiation rites? Vanden Heuvel also spoke of the "occupation of our government" by the neocons. I think we're getting close to Michigan Militia territory here....

"Neoconservative" never had a precise programmatic content. It originated as a pejorative term for leftist intellectuals who resisted the McGovernization of the Democratic Party, and who began to question liberalism generally for having led to that debacle

The best definiton of neocon I have read--and I forget where I read it--is this: "A liberal mugged by reality."

Edit: Google tells me if was Irving Kristol who uttered that pithy description.
