Rock_nj > They preceive their country as a benevolent force in the world, when really the U.S. is a warlike imperialistic power just like any in modern history

I often wondered if "kicking ass" doesn't come with the turf? As the world's only superpower, I suppose if the US wants to lead a hegemony amongst other nations, it can't do that, as you say, by sitting home. So, it has to go around picking fights just to show who is the boss and, of course, the Mid East is an ideal place to do it, especially as far as the pro-Israeli neocons are concerned. Unfortunately there are costs to this policy, not the least being economic and also the way Americans feel about themselves and others feel about them. And I imagine the death of 100,000 Iraqis, who did nothing to harm the US, is also worthy of consideration and cannot easily be written off as a joke.

Indeed, I imagine this period in US history will go down as a watershed. Things will not be the same again.
