optimistic view of evolution
He must have meant "the THEORY of evolution". Does taking an optimistic view of that theory mean one is able to consider the science on which it is based, and evaluate the evidence supporting the theory? Because if that is what it means, it would explain why most people can't. Math and science- Americans rank toward the bottom of the world in those skills. Sadly

Evolution is merely the random accumulation of genetic changes that survive by finding ecological niches, as understood scientifically. It has no purpose or guaranteed result. Therefore, it is a mistake to view evolution as a matter of improvement, rather than meaningless change which could just as well, from our point of view, be trivial or even destructive.
