Then there are areas of the country like mine. I am the accompanist for two large (over 2000 students each)public high schools. Last night our Winter Concert included: O Holy Night, Bethlehem Allelu, three African Christmas songs, de Victoria's Magnum Mysterium and a stirring arrangement of Joy to the World-- the program was almost entirely religious. The one next Tues includes Silent Night, Il est né le divin enfant, O Holy Night, Rutter's Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day and concludes with the Hallelujah Chorus. Although I am nonreligious, I wholeheartedly approve of the selections. I would find the exclusion of quality music by composers like Handel or Rutter from the program an educational travesty--just another step in the dumbing down of American children, another move toward mediocrity. Because so much of our traditional classical repertoire originated in the Church and was supported by it, it quite naturally revolves around the the Church calendar. There is just no comparing Santa Baby and Rudolph to the soaring challenge of Handel. If that offends the sensibilities of nonbelievers, so be it. I've heard the arguments, and I don't buy it. We are losing too much in trying to offend no one. Rambi@deckthehallswithHandel
