Another Mayan sacrifice ritual was called “Arrow Sacrifice”. The victim was stripped and painted blue. A pointed cap was placed on his head. People armed with bows and arrows danced around the victim. As they danced, they put the victim on a stake. The priest then wounded the victim in parts of shame. A woman would pierce her tongue and run a rope through it. As she moved the rope, a plate caught the drops of blood as they fell from her tongue. Similarly, a man would pierce his penis. At daybreak the next day, the victims would be thrown into the cenote with the instructions to ask the water gods for favors. If they were still alive at noon, they were dragged out and fires were built around them. As copal incense burned, they told what the gods had told them.
