You should find these interesting:
federalbudget.com
publicdebt.treas.gov
Note that the debt has been growing under ALL administrations, not just Repub administrations.
publicdebt.treas.gov

This should give you an idea of what is going on with those "trust funds#.

Consider this: If SS were privatized, it would get that money out of the hands of the gov't and it couldn't "borrow" from it to artificially balance the budget. One way of doing this would be torequire people to save X % of their salaries in IRAs. If they didn't, 100% of the money they should have saved but didn't would be taxed away.

RMF,

Re: We should thank Laz for pointing out the TRUE extent of Bush's fiscal irresponsibilty.

Huh? I was writing about Dubya's intention to jack up the debt in my writings in the fall of 2000, prior to the Gore v. Bush debacle. This is not news.

Many of us on SI were already discussing the lies that the Clintonistas were spewing about "budget surpluses" as early as 2001, and some were pointing to the actual growth of the national debt and debt ceiling contemporaneously with the lying that Clinton was doing.

Unfortunately, not everyone on SI pays a lot of attention to such financial arcana. And a woefully tiny percentage of the public at large has any concept of what the "back story" is on the Al Gore "lock box" argument.

Yes, and about 60 million remain clueless and voted for their own financial ruin on November 2.
