You received an interesting indoctrination. Where was this and do you remember the order of nuns? I attended Catholic school at the same time - IHMS nuns, who were regarded as being pretty strict (my mother had been taught by the same order, so she gave me a lot of slack when I was in the process of setting detention records).
However, we were taught an entirely different theology of redemption. While they did preach that only Catholics would go to heaven, the definition of a Catholic was anyone who truly believed in the truth of his religion. So Gandhi, Albert Schweitzer, etc. were included.
And my friends and I truly appreciated the Legion of Decency ratings. We knew that any movie that was "Morally Objectionable in Part for All" was worth seeing.

cirrus....."Do you think kids are as influenced by that stuff as we think?"......

YES. And I think maybe you miss an important point here...NO organized religion should be taught in public schools and certainly not islam.

Here is a statement you made in your next post...I don't post this to be a smart ass but only to get my point across that kids are influenced by what they are taught in school.

....."I don't think Osama believes that nonsense about 72 virgins and so forth. That's just the stuff Muslim fundamentalists teachers use to convince kids to blow themselves up.".....

Kids blow themselves up and commit murder because they believed what they were taught. What a shame, wonder just how many kids have been taught this garbage...how many kids have no chance in life?

You said...." In the early sixties I attended a Catholic parochial school from grades 1-8, the so-called formative years. The nuns were, how shall I put it, a bit off the deep end? I remember them telling us that we were lucky to be Catholic because we had a chance to go to heaven while the poor Protestants were doomed to hell. We were subjected to two hour diatribes on all manner of issues... the Catholic church is the one true church; the Pope is infallible in matters of faith or morals and so on. Despite that rigorous indoctrination, neither I nor any of my classmates are today what would be called "good, conservative, obedient Catholics" that the school intended to mold.

What you were taught was in a religious school and was to be expected. I am talking about public schools funded by tax dollars.

The Catholic religion left those being indoctrinated some wiggle room...not so islam.

Hey I can still say part of the Mass in latin....not a dangerous thing but still a lot of what I learned as a child is still there..... IMO kids will remember most of what they are taught in their learning years and many kids will remember that islam is all good....even when they attack us those who have learned that islam is good will grow up and be a person that will make excuses for radical behavior within the religion of islam. Even if it kills us.

And I thought Protestants went to Purgatory...unless they managed to get Baptized real quick on their death bed. If I remember correctly Purgatory was a place for Catholic sinners to go to be punished for a few million years before the could enter Heaven...If something like that exists I will be spending a lot of time there.

IMO ALL organized religions are for the sole purpose of controling people...In the free world religions are a form of government within the countries existing government. In islam countries the religion in their countries IS the government....NO wiggle room.

Seems to me that there was another place for non Catholics to go after death if they were not baptized Catholic....babies who die before they can be baptized or someone say living in a remote jungle where they never heard of the Catholic religion....can't remember the name of the place...Maybe someone here will know.

....LIMBO...That's it!
