I have a simpler way of dealing with the McCarthy-era addition of 'under God' to the Pledge. When reciting it, I simply don't say 'under God', but recite the rest - the way it was originally intended. That way, I convey my belief, that the Pledge is a strong compact, while retaining the intended separation of church and state.

I believe if someone refuses to recite the pledge, and even refuses to stand for it, they end up closing the minds of others as to their point.
