CB, a few days ago, u made a reference to the word "niggardly" being used. Heres my experience :

Yesterday, I was at a pub here. Had 3 beers $4/pint. When I left, I tipped the bartender $1, and apologized saying "that is a niggardly tip, but its all the change I have". The bartender showed me her weekly tip bowl : all change counted added up to $9, and she said "mate, in my books that is a generous tip".

Bottomline : around here "niggardly" is understood to mean "miserly". The use of a word, has to take into account, ones desire to say things in a way that best explains their intended use of the word, hopefully without being offensive.
