NL,
I have not really thought through the gay marriage thing so i have been quiet but reading the posts with interest. Your queston about pedophelia and a prior post about bestiality and genetic disposition for the deviant lead me to the following tentative conclusion.
Most male homosexuals that i have met see predisposed to that behaviour. Not sure if its as strong a correlation for lesbians. In our society, the desire to try new things may lead certain folks to try these things who are not predisposed. But all in all, i would think most are predisposed. But if thats true why do we call it deviance at all? Its just the way you are wired.
My own feeling is that most folks whether homo or hetero are not into pedophelia or beastiality. Thus most folks will be opposed to that deviant behavior and call for laws against it. Men, in particular, of either variety have stronger more aggressive sex drives than woman and thus if brought up in destructive environment may turn to deviance. Just like murder, robbery and other crimes these folks must be punished and hopefully treated. But to say homosexuals are deviant in the same sense is ridiculous and I started out as a homophobe many years ago so i have come a long way too. mike@sort_of_a_rant.com

I think attraction to children probably does have a genetic component- based on the impossibility of treating the behavior, and the studies that have been done in the area. However, it's easy to divide the two cases legally- children do not have the capacity to contract, and to make sound judgments for themselves- for this reason we do not allow children to marry heterosexually without the consent of their parents when they are juveniles, and we choose to protect children in ways we do not protect adults. Homosexuals are attracted to other adults, who can choose to be with them or not, and who can enter in to a valid contract of marriage- easy distinction to make.

Animal Exuberance is a great book about homosexuality in the animal kingdom. It's a fairly interesting read, imo.
